Rev Lisa Coupland, who gained recognition from her appearance on BBC1’s The Traitors, is now using her platform to advocate for women in ministry.
She is the face of a new campaign by the international development charity Tearfund, which aims to celebrate the contributions of female priests and pastors worldwide.
The campaign video, titled #ThisPastorCan, was released today in honor of International Women’s Day. It features women pastors from various countries, including Kenya, Myanmar, and the Philippines, who share words of wisdom that have inspired them and reflect on their proudest moments in ministry.
Rev Lisa expressed her excitement about the initiative, saying: “It’s wonderful to see Tearfund shining a light on women in ministry! Many of us tend to downplay our strengths, and I was initially hesitant to mention my role as a priest on The Traitors. But on this International Women’s Day, I’m ready to embrace it and celebrate alongside so many inspiring women.”
The campaign also includes contributions from Rt Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the first Black woman to serve as a Church of England Bishop. She shared advice that has shaped her ministry, quoting Maya Angelou: “People may not remember what you say, but they will always remember how you made them feel.”
Pastor Josephine Brown from Kenya emphasized the importance of resilience and determination in ministry, referencing the Bible’s depiction of a noble woman. She credited her mother and spiritual mentor for encouraging her to stay focused and determined, noting that “a noble woman is rare, but when equipped, she can accomplish great things for her family, community, and even the world.”
Tearfund, a Christian organization operating in over 50 countries, hopes that the #ThisPastorCan campaign will shed light on the vital role women play in church leadership and ministry.
